我国很多城市空气SO2污染十分严重，目前已有62%的城市环境空气SO2平均浓度超过国家《环境空气质量标准》二级标准、日平均浓度超过国家《环境空气质量标准》三级标准。

目前占全国面积近50%左右的地区受到由于SO2大量排放而引起的酸雨污染，降水pH值小于5.6的面积（国家评价酸雨的标准）已经占国土面积的30%。华中地区的酸雨污染程度已经超过八十年代污染重的西南地区，酸性降水频率超过90%。
